Mom if your reading this I hope you don’t mind that I did a complete overhaul on that dresser you gave me. Painting furniture used to be pretty scary for me…not that I’ve painted a whole slew of pieces but the couple I’ve done have made me realize the potential my old pieces have. Not to mention eased my anxiety of the possibility of completely ruining a solid piece of furniture.
Now I’m hooked.
I love the look, I love seeing the transformation and being able to bring new life to something that might’ve ended up in the burn pile.
Pure & Original provided the paint that was used to complete this labor of love. I supplied the elbow grease, rescued furniture, design concept and opinions! All of which reflect my own point of view, regardless of sponsorship…

I’m just going to get right into this one. You guys know that I usually lead into some long story about what’s going on around here, but I’m so excited about painting furniture today that I can’t stop staring at my beautiful new-old piece and I just want to get down to it.
First I’d really like to thank Carrie over at Thirty Eighth Street and Stacy at Anastasia Vintage for hosting this month’s Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest linky and posting about this amazing product. Head on over for some awesome inspiration!
Here’s what our media area looked like before…
Kinda sad. The TV dwarfs that sofa table – I’ve got a plan for that but for now…mom’s my dresser before she found her new identity…
4 Simple Steps to Update an old Dresser
Step 1
Give her some legs. The easiest thing it turns out. You can find fancy, simple, crazy and everything in between for furniture feet. I liked these for the curves. This dresser was all straight lines and sat right on the floor before, but with her new legs she stands tall and has a little more interest.
Add 1×4 boards to the outer edges on the bottom of your piece, giving something to attach the new feet to.
Step 2
Trim her up. I bought this trim specifically for how well it pairs with the legs. Again adds interest and breaks up the straight lines.
Cut at a 45 degree angle and match up the ends at the corners, fill the seams with wood filler and sand as needed until smooth.
Carefully using a table saw (which I will not do due to an incident that leaves me terrified of the thing) Bob ripped down just enough to cover the edges of the inserted board where the middle drawers were removed.
Finally! – Painting Furniture
Step 3
Apply a fresh coat. My favorite part that has the biggest impact. Fill deep nicks and scratches with wood filler, allow to dry and sand as needed until smooth.
You’ll notice the lovely addition…thank you Ky…
I’m loving this paint from Pure and Original!
Contestants of the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest were supplied with Classico, a chalk based paint that dries quickly, has an awesome matte finish, doesn’t require primer and doesn’t need to be sealed (unless using in a high traffic area such as kitchen or bath). This paint is environmentally friendly and made with 100% natural pigments.
Did I mention I love this paint? I love it! The coverage is amazing and the color selection is outstanding.
For this project I used Pigeon Grey on the middle shelves and Polar Blue on the rest of the piece.
Don’t forget your cord holes if making a media center.
If you are planning on painting furniture and really like the matte finish look you’ll really like this paint.
I love how this dresser flipped to media center turned out and to be honest I didn’t even realize the side had the beveled line detail until I started painting it. Sort of has a cottage feel and adds to the character.
Step 4
Give her pretty jewelry – Knobs! I was recently asked in a blogger group, “what is your decor weakness” – as in, what do you find yourself not able to get enough of? Mine is buying furniture knobs. Is that weird? If you’ve browsed the isles of Marshall’s or TJ Maxx lately then you’ve noticed all the pretty things. Oh I can’t get enough of Hobby Lobby’s amazing selection either!
I tend to buy without a purpose in mind but usually find a great use at some point.
I love the blue in this rug and I’m pleased with how everything ties together.
That huge TV is balanced now…I just need to make sure Bob doesn’t decide he needs a bigger one…I mean really?
