Since we’ve owned our own home whether here or there, a big part of summer has always been flowers! Making sure those annuals have blooms till the very last light of summer can be a challenge!
I’ve got the secret to keeping your flower garden vibrant and luscious all summer long.
Being in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is already a challenge for annual flower planting, in itself. Our frost can go into June and the weather is so unpredictable. If the frost moves in unexpectedly it’s possible to lose a whole years worth of flowers overnight.
It’s happened before! And I’ve cried! It’s not unusual to have pots and hangers all over my living room during the night hours in early summer.
With all that aside, I’ve got a basic schedule that anyone can follow to get greenhouse-worthy plants we all strive for.
5 Best Tips for a Beautiful Flower Garden
- Always water thoroughly in the MORNING. I try to make sure mine are done no later than 10 am.
- Use a WATER SOLUBLE FERTILIZER. I schedule mine for every Wednesday and Saturday.
- DEADHEAD and PINCH BACK plants that have bigger flowers when they start to wilt. If you don’t do this they will try to seed, using all their nutrients and will no longer flower.
- During the first week of July TRIM BACK if needed and ADD TIME-RELEASE FERTILIZER, these are the little granules.
- Do steps 1 and 2 EVEN IF it RAINS.
