I’ve had this frame for so long I can’t even remember where I got it and while it served it’s purpose for many moons, I was ready to transform this formal decor piece using an easy chippy paint technique.
I adore the shabby chic, chippy paint look so when I came across this super simple technique I knew I had to try it.
No sanding or aggressive distressing needed? Tell me more!
I have a secret ingredient…
Vaseline! or Petroleum jelly, whatever you want to call it. No really, stay with me here.
Put that slimy stuff where ever you want that magic chippy look.
Spray paint and let the piece dry.
Seriously this was the longest step…and I’m impatient. Which of course means I went to town wiping it off only 10 minutes after painted – it was long enough for me. Hey I really wanted to see if it would work.
If you try this don’t plan on keeping the rag you used to wipe off the vaseline. But seriously this is so cool!
This photo originally appeared on my Instagram feed for a weekly challenge back in July…hence all of our patriotic love. This kid-art was something K created a looong time ago. There are some things that I just can’t let go of.
Anyone else have this problem? I’ve really gotten better at it, especially during the move and having to downsize.
My #1 tip for these sentimental items? Display them! I don’t mean all at once, but certainly bring them out and let others enjoy them too. And come to think of it, so much of what they bring home from school is seasonal. Take advantage people…hmmmm Halloween is right around the corner and I know there’s some good kid-art stashed away.
Awww, I’m feeling all fuzzy inside…missing that little stage when just coloring in the lines was an accomplishment…Now? homecoming dresses and college talks are a main topic. Seems like just yesterday…

Much of my daughters early school years art I stowed in plastic boxes when we moved. Several months ago, missing the sweet little girl she was for the typical teenager she has grown into, I went through some of it. You are so right, much Thanksgiving/Fall, Christmas, Easter and spring art items. The conventional sized Items I scanned to save on the cloud since I’m redoing some of her ‘paper’ scrapbooks in PowerPoint for an electronic version and I wanted to incorporate sizable art for this project. The ones that touched my heartstrings the most, Iput in a binder and will be framing as you have demonstrated here for seasonal purposes.I like your chippy frame, love the vintage, weathered look. I know all about prom dresses and makeup for the prom and the college plans, my daughter just turned 18, makes you wonder where all of those ‘little girl’ years went and makes me more than a little sad they are over so quickly. Thanks for your idea on the frame, I know I’ll use it eventually, too many WIPS to finish up!

I love the idea of scanning projects – makes them last forever! Great idea! And oh yeah, had that moment for homecoming when I had the overwhelming feeling of having to let go…just a little…my baby is a little women. Waaaa! You should definitely try this technique, so easy!
