We are seeing the rustic-chic home decor look everywhere! I’m really hoping this one sticks around for awhile. If you’re like me and think of the amazing old farmhouses out there and how some have been around for a couple hundred years or so, I’d say I’m safe and you will be too if you make this re-purposed DIY rustic chic rope lamp like I did. And while it may not be officially “farmhouse” decor, some of it kinda goes hand in hand. I love this look!
You can use any old lamp. You have one lying around the house? Good, use it. You don’t? Go to your good ‘ole thrift store.
I’ve had this lamp for quite awhile and it’s put in many miles as a large burnt orange light source. Some 15 years ago I was dropping off items to a local thrift store and behold this beauty was sitting outside. When asked about it they said it’s yours…yes folks free!
I really liked it back then…you know when all the dark earthy tones were big news. I think I was ready to paint everything sage green and red. Oh wait I did do that…and accented with my lovely free lamp.
Hey orange lamp! You served your time then and now we are into the new and improved, re-purposed future of rustic-chic decor.
You could pretty much use any lamp for this project but anything with a round design (meaning not angular like squared) is best.
Supplies:
- lamp
- rope
- hot glue gun
- plenty of glue sticks
Start wrapping…and gluing!
This process does take some time so grab your coffee, turn on some music or a great podcast (I recently bought the book and started listening to this podcast that supplements it – fantastic!) and just keep going – kinda like I did in this post.
Keep your rope taught and push it down as you go to avoid large gaps.
A few things I will say at this point…yes my glue gun is older than I’d like to admit and cheap at that – hey it still works, I’m sure I’ll replace that thing eventually. I could say Mr. D and the W are my helpers but until I got their attention to get a photo, they were sleeping. Guess a rustic chic rope lamp isn’t motivating to them. A treat, well that’s another story.
And the drop-cloth you see that is covering my table and sofa (I’m pretty sure there’s more than a few stains – hey it was once a table cloth) is to protect everything from the webs of glue that started to string around everything. If you look closely you can see the clear little boogies all over my rope. Bob actually gave me a great idea to get rid of it…I wish I had taken a video of it – looked really neat. I used a lighter and (being very careful) burned off the glue and fuzzies from the rope. It burned quickly and went out easily. If you try this technique please be safe and in proper supervision, keep a wet cloth on hand and do it in small sections. I am not liable for any fires! Outside after a rain (or snow) might be advised!I love the way this turned out and can’t wait to see it in my, currently being renovated, living room. In the meantime I’ll be enjoying it with a white paper backdrop and the vinyl wood look that will eventually grace my floors (purchased and supplied from Grayling’s World of Floors).
